A love story between man and the Causse

The history of the Causses is best understood if we go back to the Jurassic age, when layers of limestone were deposited by water, and gradually eroded by the wind, the rain and the ice.  The result of this process is a landscape of strangely sculpted rock formations, and, where the water won the battle between itself and the rock, deep gorges and canyons.

Man has always been fascinated by the Causses, and its caves have provided shelter since prehistoric times.  Traces of man’s habitation of these caves can still be found today.

The Romans were also attracted to the stones and the splendour of the region, and many rare Roman wells can still be seen dotted around the landscape.
