The village of Le Massegros gives its name to the western section of the Sauveterre Causse, situated between the Tarn Gorges and the town of Sévérac-le-Château.  Nestling in fertile agricultural land, the village is named from the Occitan “Mas a gro”, meaning grain-growning domain, and indeed, the area has long been one of the rare places where wheat is cultivated. The settlement developed between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century and was the location of annual livestock markets.
The centre of the settlement was once situated at St Georges de Lévéjac, and the transfer of the community to the existing site was as late as 1912, when the new church was built by the Abbot Casimir Privat.  The church was consecrated in 1914.
Sheep, which were farmed for their milk rather than for their wool or meat, were the principal source of income for the inhabitants of Le Massegros.  Today, the dairy at Le Massegros remains one of the largest in the world, employing nearly 200 people.

The Massegros

The village boasts several old caussenard buildings, one of which exhibits the characteristics of an Aragon house, with its covered gallery and arcades and balustrades linking eight individual roofs.
The communal bread oven, which dates from the 19th century, is of a particularly impressive size, a vibrant reminder of the past which has withstood both the batterings of the elements and the neglect of man.  Today, it is celebrated as the centre-piece of the annual bread festival.

The Massegros is proud of the happy and harmonious marriage between its traditional architecture and the more modern buildings it contains, such as the town hall and the post office.
